Radiation Radiation Therapy uses high dose x-rays to kill or damage breast cancer cells to prevent them from growing or dividing.
Radiation is called a local treatment. It is recommended in conjunction with a lumpectomy to kill any cancer cells that remain in the breast; however, it does not kill cancer cells that might have spread to other parts of the body.
Radiation therapy is usually delivered externally on an outpatient basis. External radiation targets the entire breast area with high-energy rays from a machine called a linear accelerator. The treatment takes a few minutes each day, five days a week for approximately five weeks depending on your unique treatment plan. |
