Prosthetics + Wigs Directory
BCSS provides an invaluable service to the community consisting of a prosthesis, bra and wig bank in our centre on Brant street. We offer these items free of charge to women who cannot afford them, or who do not have an insurance plan to help cover the costs of these items.
Most of the products are donated to us by companies, individuals and organizations. Some items are used, however they are in extremely good condition and always cleaned.
Want to learn the basics? Looking for government assistance to buy a prosthesis? Want a prosthesis supplier close to you? Read on for these answers and more.
Prosthesis basics
- Prosthesis come in sizes 1-14, lefts and rights.
- Most prosthesis come with a cover, it is optional whether you wear the cover or not.
- A prosthesis should be stored in its box at night, as it helps to keep it in good shape.
- Prosthesis range in price from $200 - $500
Choosing a prosthesis
- For some women privacy in choosing a bra and prosthesis is very important. If this is important to you check that the fitter you intend using has a private change room for you to use.
- The prosthesis weight is an important factor for some women. Ask about the new ultra-light models, but remember that the weight of the prosthesis must be a balance to the natural side
- You should be able to leave the fitters office/store wearing your prosthesis
Payment of prosthesis
Assistance to help pay for your prosthesis exists
- ADP - Assistive Devices Program of OHIP pay for a portion of the cost - in some cases
- ADP pays for one prosthesis every 2 years, if required. Some plans will pick up the difference between the amount ADP pays for the prosthesis and the actual cost.
- Many plans also pay for mastectomy bras every calendar year. Check to find out how many you are allowed.
Temporary Prosthesis
Following surgery, a temporary, "softee-bra" may be worn to allow the skin to heal.
They are designed on the lines of a fitted camisole/undershirt and come with a temporary prosthesis. They usually cost between $50-80 but can be used even after you are fitted. An alternative is to also wear a loose fitting exercise bra.

Wigs and Hair Loss
It is important to remember there is no reason for anyone to feel inhibited, or self-conscious because of his or her hair loss. As a wig wearer for over 20 years, I have experienced first hand the advancements in style, comfort and quality, and how wigs today are both fashionable and practical.
It is no hardship that I spend many hours and weekends at my showroom, The Medical Image in Oakville. I am also dedicated to volunteering my time as a wig specialist for the Look Good Feel Better Program (1-800-914-5665). You will see me at workshops at Hamilton Henderson Hospital, Wellspring Halton-Peel, Mt. Sinai and Scarborough Centenary Hospital in Toronto.
In cases of chemotherapy treatment, hair loss usually starts after the first or second treatment depending on the medication used. Remember that the best time to be fitted for a wig is before you lose your hair.
I bring to each workshop a wealth of information - the latest in wig styles and colors, as well as some very "fashion forward" hats and headwear.
Here are a few tips to hopefully make your wig selection easier.
Size:
Wigs sizes range from Ultra Petite to Large. It usually only takes a few days to special order your size and color. A bad fitting wig is like a bad fitting pair of shoes.
Colour:
Choose a colour that you, your family and friends can live with for at least nine months.
Think about it before making a sudden change!
Style:
Every wig needs some styling to flatter your face and profile. Choose a wig specialist who is a qualified stylist and has the experience of working with wigs.
