Planned Giving

If you could make a difference by leaving a legacy to help support Breast Cancer Survivors …
Would you?

If you could help Breast Cancer Survivors cope with their illness…
Would you?

If you could educate women and men to reduce the risk of Breast Cancer…
Would you?

You can make a difference and help yourself at the same time…

“There are so many reasons to make a planned gift”, says, Brian Weatherdon CFP CLU of Sovereign Wealth Management. “Planned Giving is like planting a small tree today, so it will provide shade and joy to people over years to come.”

“Planned giving helps us to ensure the delivery of our programs and services for the future”, says, Blair Lancaster Executive Director of BCSS. There are so many ways to give, some are more complicated than others but your financial advisor will sort out what is right for you and can ensure you enjoy the many tax benefits of both Personal and Planned Giving. He or she will review your financial situation and consider what will happen to your estate in the event of your death. With proper planning you can avoid many of the costs usually associated with distributing your estate.

A Tribute Gift can be made to honour a special occasion, individual or family, mark a milestone event or memorialize a loved one, friend or colleague.

Monthly or yearly donations to Breast Cancer Support Services will make a significant and lasting investment in our programs and services. You can affordably donate any amount with this program.

Planned Gifts are usually a special gift, with a plan to be realized in the future. Usually within a persons’ financial plan, or estate. There are several different gift methods including; Bequests, a gift stipulated in a persons will, Life Insurance, where Breast Cancer Support Services would be named as the owner and beneficiary and premiums are tax deductible. It can create a tax refund today for the premium, or later for the entire death benefit. Gift Plus Annuity is a legal contract that enables BCSS to purchase a lifetime annuity on behalf of a donor. The balance of the contribution becomes the donor’s gift to BCSS. Gifts of Residual Interest, is usually encountered when a donor wishes to make an irrevocable gift of property, such as a residence or a gift of art, while retaining life interest (the use and enjoyment for the rest of their life). Tax savings may be realized now or at the time of death. A Charitable Remainder Trust is funded with income-producing assets (cash, securities, or real estate). The income is paid for life, to the individual beneficiary or donor and the principal is donated to BCSS upon his or her death.

Laurie Mackie CFP and Catherine Holmes CFP, with Investors Group Financial Services, have found that their clients are pleased to learn of the variety of charitable giving strategies available that will save them income tax both now and when their estate settles. “We help people choose and implement the strategy that makes the most sense to them, their charity and their estate.” As an example one client had a $380,000.00 non-registered investment plan. Since she wanted to continue enjoying the income it generated in her lifetime (to support herself and her monthly charitable donations) and had already designated two charities as her sole beneficiaries in her Will, we decided to invest most of this non-registered portfolio in a segregated fund that would allow her to draw income and also to designate the charities as beneficiaries (so the investment goes directly to the charities which will reduce estate taxes). It is important to note, no one should embark on these strategies without first consulting a professional. Investors Group has a free report called “Your legacy and charitable giving.”

As you can see there are many options available for planned and personal giving but the important thing to remember is in participating in planned giving you will be helping to insure the future of Breast Cancer Support Services. We all benefit from trees planted and the roads built by people who came before us. If we can learn how to give 10% to 20% of what we have to purposes beyond ourselves, we will be astounded by what comes back to us. Planned and personal giving benefits everyone!” says Brian Weatherdon, CFP CLU.

Your financial support will help Breast Cancer Support Services, to continue supporting families and individuals who have been affected by Breast Cancer.
